Calligrapher Shinsui Goto’s works
"Zansho"
Introduction
Shinsui Goto, an influential calligrapher lived in Nagaoka city, Niigata prefecture for years
and dedicated herself to create calligraphic works besides teaching and training her successors.
She left an enormous number of works and died at the age of 95.
They say she was working energetically until the last moment.
Many of her works were decorated in the form of folding screens, hanging scrolls, and frames.
Her family members desired for as many of them to remain as possible,
and we decided to create a collection of her works.
I started photo shooting from 2018, and finally it was completed in July, 2020.
The book of the collection named “Zansho” means 'afterglow' and is not for sale.
Therefore I have created the website for the purpose of letting as many people as possible taste
her artistic world, in which subtle but fertile beauty of the calligraphy in Kana characters is vividly breathing.
In the process of shooting, and creating the book, I was privileged to be able to thoroughly enjoy the beauty,
and hope you all looking at the site could share the same.

The works
Shinsui Goto, the calligrapher, started her career from joining the North Japan Calligraphic Society
when she was 40 years old.
Her calligraphies here are mainly from the “Wakas” famous in “Kokin Waka-shu”, “Shin Kokin Waka-shu”, “Manyo-shu” and “Hyakunin Isshu.”She was concerned not only with her calligraphy, but also papers and outfits. Her favorite colors were lovely and flowery.
